Considerations when renting a dumpster for a roofing project

Roof jobs are weight jobs. The cleanest approach on the Treasure Coast is: set the largest can you can place safely (25 or 30), keep the load flat and at/below the rails, and pull when you hit your stop line—don’t heap.

Asphalt shingles: squares → setup (single layer, dry conditions)
  • Up to ~25 squares: 25 or 30-yard (single haul)
  • ~26–45 squares: 30-yard (single haul)
  • ~46–60 squares: 30-yard (single haul; keep flat)
  • ~61–80 squares: 30-yard + one additional haul
  • Over ~80 squares: Two 30s cycling (2–3 total hauls)
Adjusters:
  • Extra layers: Behave like +30–40% more squares; add one haul in the same band.
  • Wet tear-offs/rain week: Behave like +10–20% more squares; tarp between passes.
  • Sheathing repairs: Add a haul.
Tile/slate/concrete roofs (common across the Treasure Coast)These are far denser than asphalt. Keep a 15/20-yard as the primary can for workflow, but expect earlier pulls for the same square count. Ridge/mortar adds surprising weight. Treat even small tile roofs with real headroom and pull early rather than heaping.
Load method for roofing that actually hauls
  • Stage by the door; shingles or tile go in first, low and centered.
  • Keep the top flat—no cone piles.
  • Fill corners with felt, packaging, and other light materials last.
  • Below the rails, every time. If you’re near your stop line, pull the can.
  • No restricted items: adhesives/primers, fuels, propane cylinders, batteries, mercury bulbs—keep them out.
  • Tarp overnight—afternoon storms add pounds and slow pickup.
Site & community realities
  • Paver driveways: Use plywood under rails/wheels.- Precision Disposal uses more durable 2x10 planks for better weight distribution
  • Gated/HOA: Reserve set/pick windows; keep the approach clear at swap times.
  • Beach corridors & downtowns: Traffic spikes and shorter working windows—book pulls earlier in the day.
Roofing FAQs (squares-based)Can a 30-yard handle ~60 squares of single-layer asphalt?
Yes—common. Keep it flat and at/below the rails and pull at the stop line.
When do I add a second haul for asphalt?
Around ~61–80 squares in dry, single-layer conditions, or sooner if the load is soaked or there are extra layers.
Do tile/slate roofs change the plan?
Yes. Use a 30 for workflow but expect more total hauls for the same squares compared to asphalt.
Why no heaping above the rails?
It’s unsafe and won’t tarp. Overfilled loads shed debris; overweight loads lengthen stopping distance and stress brakes/axles.
What keeps the crew moving fastest?
One big can (25/30) kept flat with timely pulls beats multiple small cans and reloads every time.
