Hurricane Season Dumpster Playbook (Treasure Coast)

Hurricane season is when small mistakes get expensive. The goal is simple: keep your site safe, keep loads legal, and keep the project moving—rain or shine. Here’s the Treasure Coast playbook that works for homes and contractors across Port St. Lucie, Fort Pierce, Vero Beach, Stuart, Jensen Beach, Palm City, Sebastian, and Hobe Sound.

1) What private roll-offs are for vs. municipal debris pickupCity/county storm programs typically focus on vegetative debris (tree limbs, yard waste) and storm-damaged materials placed at the curb. Remodel/demo debris (cabinets, drywall, roofing, tile, furniture, construction materials) usually isn’t taken in those rounds. Plan a private roll-off for project debris and keep curb piles limited to what your municipality actually accepts.
2) Choose the container by density—not just volume
  • Heavy debris (tile, concrete, soil, roofing shingles): use 10 or 15-yard OR a 30-yard kept flat and below the rails with a timely pull.
  • Light/bulky (furniture, drywall, cardboard): 20, 25, or 30-yard.
  • Roofing (asphalt, single layer, dry): 25 or 30-yard works—load flat; pull at your stop line.
  • Tile/slate (dense): still use a 30 for workflow, but expect earlier pulls at the same square count.
3) Pre-drop site setup that prevents delays
  • Surface: A flat, hard pad. Lay plywood on pavers.
  • Approach: Keep a straight 60–80 ft approach and 10–12 ft overhead clearance.
  • Drainage: Avoid swales/soft shoulders—after heavy rain, they swallow wheels.
  • Access windows: If you’re in a gated/HOA community, reserve set/pick windows.
4) Load sequence that stays legal in high winds
  1. Dense base first—tile/concrete/roofing low and centered, front-to-back.
  2. Fill corners with light items (bagged trash, plastics, cardboard).
  3. Break down bulk (flat cabinets, disassembled furniture) to kill air pockets.
  4. Latch the door, then top off lightly from the sides.
  5. Stop at the rail—if the tarp won’t sit flat, it won’t haul.
5) Rain rules that save money
  • Tarp every night and between afternoon storms. You don’t want to pay to dump water.
  • Keep wet drywall and yard waste low and centered; wet loads shift more.
  • If lightning or downpours hit, pause loading and secure the site.
6) Road safety mattersOverfilled loads shed debris—nails, shingles, wood—into traffic. That’s unsafe and illegal, and it leads to fines and cleanup bills. Overweight loads increase stopping distance and stress brakes/axles. Keep it flat and below the rails.
7) What not to load (common storm-season mistakes)No liquids/chemicals (paint, thinners, fuels), batteries, propane/pressurized cylinders, mercury bulbs/thermostats, refrigerant appliances (without certified recovery), tires. Stage these for HHW/e-waste drop-offs.
