HOBE SOUND FLORIDA
Hobe Sound is a small town on the Atlantic coast, just south of Port Salerno. It was initially called "Little Cow Creek" after an Indian village located on the banks of the river in what is now Sunset Park.
The History
The first white man to settle here was Captain William Clark Russell, who arrived in 1884 on his yacht Nellie, which he moored at Little Cow Creek.
He lived with his family for two years before moving to Palm Beach, where he died in 1888 at age 35.
His home may still be seen today near the west end of Monroe Street in Hobe Sound, although it has been moved from its original location off of A1A due to coastal erosion and development along the coast.
The town was platted in 1886 by the Florida East Coast Land Company, who had purchased most of it by 1892. Almost immediately, there were many disputes between settlers over property rights and land values.
Some examples include General Sherman's son trying to claim that he owned all of Hobe Sound south of A1A, which led to a lawsuit being filed against him by the residents.
Other business owners would often try to grab too much land or get more than their share of waterfront property leading to problems with early pioneers such as Lewis Ayer, Judge Edmund Sewall, Samuel J. Hodges Sr., John W. Stewart Jr., Dr. Evans Crary, and Edward E. Wilson.
They were initially given over 11,000 acres in the settlement.
The town's name changed to "Hobe Sound" when it was incorporated in 1893, and its post office had been established the year before. A railroad station was built in 1894.
It became a haven for wealthy industrialists such as Charles Kettering, Thomas Alva Edison, Harvey S. Firestone, and Henry Ford, who came here to relax away from the fast-paced life of their business ventures back home.
In 1897 an area known as Tomkin's Point (now part of Jupiter Island) became the site of a military base called Camp Jossman that would become one of two coast artillery installations protecting Palm Beach.
It housed approximately 800 soldiers, and most of them were African Americans who were segregated on the base and in nearby towns such as Jupiter and Hypoluxo.
Many wealthy industrialists began to settle in Hobe Sound after World War II.
However, their presence did not affect the town much because most of them kept a low profile and enjoyed privacy more than they enjoyed impressing people with fancy houses.
Times changed, however, when multimillionaires such as Jerry Hall, Calvin Klein, and Mick Jagger built mega-mansions that were too large to ignore.
It also became a haven for retirees who started moving into the area during the mid-20th century.
Hobe Sound remains unincorporated today but is about one square mile larger than it was back in 1993 due to annexation by Port Salerno in 1994, which also brought with it two public schools.

If visiting places like the beach, plan on using sunblock or sunscreen because ultraviolet rays from sunlight can cause mild to severe sunburns, depending on how much is applied, skin type, age, gender, and more.
