The Do's and don'ts- Dumpster Rental Material Loading

Most non-hazardous household junk, wood, drywall, and yard waste are fine. Liquids, fuels, chemicals, batteries, propane tanks, and mercury bulbs are out. When in doubt, use local Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and e-waste programs.
Commonly accepted (confirm your project specifics)

Lets be clear- each landfill/county within the Treasure Coast has it's own set of rules and regulations- here are some general considerations when renting a dumpster:
  • Cleanouts: furniture, clothing, toys, non-refrigerated appliances (remove doors).
  • Construction & demo: lumber, drywall, subfloor, cabinets, windows (tape/wrap glass), bath/kitchen debris.
  • Roofing shingles: allowed—remember they are dense.
  • Yard waste: branches, leaves; some communities prefer separation.
Not allowed or needs special handling
  • Liquids/chemicals: wet paint, thinners, fuels, pool chemicals, pesticides.
  • Batteries: car, lithium, tool packs—universal waste only.
  • Pressurized tanks: propane/helium cylinders.
  • Mercury items: fluorescent tubes, some thermostats.
  • Refrigerant appliances: certified recovery required.
  • Tires: often refused or surcharged--
“Ask first” items (policies vary by site and season)
  • Electronics/TVs & monitors: often diverted to e-waste channels.
  • Soil, concrete, brick, dirt: allowed as clean fill, but extremely heavy—keep loads flat and at/below rails.
  • Railroad ties/treated wood: site-dependent.
  • Latex paint: usually okay only when fully dried.
Why these rules exist
  • Safety: pressure cylinders and lithium batteries can ignite or explode.
  • Environmental: mercury, solvents, and fuels contaminate soil and waterways—especially after storms push debris through drains.
  • Operations: restricted items get loads rejected at transfer stations and trigger surcharges.
Treasure Coast callouts
  • Rain adds weight. Tarp nightly to prevent paying to dump water.
  • Storm cleanup: City debris programs don’t accept remodel/demo material; private roll-offs do.
  • HOA communities: Some require lists of prohibited items and set/pick windows—bring rules to the jobsite so crews load correctly.
Quick decision path
  1. Is it liquid, pressurized, a battery, or mercury? Don’t load—use HHW/e-waste.
  2. Is it dense (concrete/tile/soil/shingles)? Load low and centered; stop at the rail.
  3. Unsure? Stage aside and ask—cheaper than a rejected load.
